Tamika is fully qualified as a Counsellor, Gestalt Therapist and Astrologer. She currently holds the following qualifications: Master Gestalt Therapy (GTS), Adv. Dip Gestalt Therapy (TGI); Grad. Dip. Counselling (ACAP); and Dip. Astrology (Canopus). She specialises in working with anxiety, depression, grief & loss, stress, trauma and relationship therapy.
Tamika facilitates Domestic Violence and Women's Self Esteem groups on the Central Coast. She is also an assistant trainer at the Terrigal Gestalt Institute and works as the resident counsellor at the Quest For Life residential program with Petrea King.
Her many years of supporting clients who have experienced childhood trauma, abuse, hardship and domestic violence provide Tamika with an awareness into the complexities that stem from such adverse life experiences.
By holding a spiritual and holistic approach to work and life, Tamika is able to provide a respectful, safe and supportive environment where clients can explore both individual and relationship concerns. This caring and empathic approach to supporting her clients encourages and assists individuals to develop a self awareness and to use this gained knowledge for personal growth and positive life changes.
In conjunction with personal growth gained through counselling, clients also have the option and opportunity to combine Astrology with their counselling sessions. By analysing the Astrological natal chart, Tamika is able to able to explore natal predispositions and characteristics which will assist the client to tap into inner strengths or untapped energy. Through this process unconscious patterns that may be hindering the client in their life, are brought into their awareness. This awareness enables the client to make informed choices about their future, rather than struggling with the 'what is'.
WHAT IS GESTALT?
Gestalt therapy was developed in the late 1940's by Fritz Perls (www.fritzperls.com). Gestalt is a form of therapy that is holistic, interactive and experimental. The word Gestalt means to unify as a whole, hence, Gestalt Psychotherapy emphasizes and honors the unity of mind, emotions, body and soul.
Whilst events from the past may surface during a therapy session, the Gestalt therapist focuses and looks at how these past events affect or impact the client in the here and now.
Gestalt is based on the therapist and client building trust and working together to build awareness. By focusing on feelings and sensations in the body , the Gestalt Therapist is able to assist the client to tune into the present. During this process, the client is able to become aware of the patterns of behaviour, underlying belief systems and of past experiences that can hinder the client from living their life to their fullest in the now. This awareness enables the client to have personal choice in relation to healthy change.
